Turn off Your TV Week

Posted in Family, and Thoughts

Munchkin and I have decided to participate in this year’s National Turn Off Your TV Week. So, from April 21-27th, we don’t plan on watching any tv at our house. I use videos in our schooling for different subjects, so we’ll even be cutting those out this week. I have to admit that I know we’ll miss watching our Little House on the Prairie episodes. lol!

Here’s the thinking behind this tv free week:

Why Turn off the TV?

Television cuts into family time, harms our children’s ability to read and succeed in school, and contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity. Here are just a few of the facts:

On average, children in the US will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours).

Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during dinner.

As US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said at the Kick Off of TV-Turnoff Week 2001, “We are raising the most overweight generation of youngsters in American history…This week is about saving lives.”

For the rest of the story go here.

At our house, we often use the tv as background noise. D always liked to have the tv on for noise, so it feels more like home when it’s on. I suppose it’s time to put on some music!

Oh wonderful! God bless you for this! 🙂 Turning off the t.v. I urge you and anyone else reading this to keep on going and extend your time to one month. When you reach that goal, move the goal further out. We haven’t watched t.v. for years, and quite honestly, the longer you go without it, the better life is! 🙂 I simply cannot imagine life ‘with it’ now. I can’t imagine ‘having time’ to watch it. My daughter (16) once in a rare while watches a video / dvd. You cannot imagine how much ‘influence’ t.v. really has on the way you think until you’ve been away from it for a long time.

I will be praying for your daughter’s loss of Clover. Our daughter lost her pet mini-holland lop rabbit, John Walton (John Buns or Buns for short), a few years ago. He lived in our house as he was litter trained. Anyway, she was devasted when he passed on. I understand that your daughter’s pain is real.

On a brighter note, I always love visiting your blog! You do such a nice job with it! 🙂

We won’t be giving up tv all together as we do enjoy watching lots of educational programming. We also enjoy series such as Little House on the Prairie. Plus, there are sports to watch. lol!

That being said, I’m sure this week will be a wake-up call in how much less we could be watching. 😉

Good job! We don’t watch much TV because we don’t have cable, so my kids don’t like anything that is on.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! 🙂 We’ll give it a go! We watched a few children’s videos yesterday, but the TV hasn;t turned on today. We have lots to do ~ this will be a blessing! I hope your daughter is feeling better.

    Blessings,
    Katie
